When Miley Cyrus created her Grammy-winning hit track “Flowers” she copied Bruno Mars’s song and faced lawsuits for copyright infringement.
Cyrus started her career at 12 on Disney Channel’s ” Hannah Montana” from 2006 to 2011. Later she came out with hits such as “Party in the U.S.A. and “Wrecking Ball”.
Why Tempo Music Investment Sued Miley Cyrus?
Tempo Music Investment claimed Cyrus’ 2023 song “Flowers”. It has many musical similarities to Mars’ 2012 romantic track “When I Was Your Man”.
The lawsuit was filed in the federal court of Los Angeles on Monday. Tempo Music had rights to a part of the U.S. copyright to “When I Was Your Man” when received from Philip Lawrence who co-wrote the song with other writers.
The suit also mentioned Apple, Target, Sony Music Publishing, Walmart, and other companies as defendants accused of distributing Cyrus’s song.
“Flowers” became a Grammy Hit and Legally Controversial Song
It cannot be denied that “Flowers” exist because of “When I Was Your Man” as both have several combinations and similarities. The complaint has names of co-writers of “Flowers” Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack as co-defendants. So Cyrus, Pollack, and Hein did a derivative work of “When I Was Your Man”.
Any fan of Mars knows that “Flowers” was not able to achieve all that success on its own. Rather it copied several elements of Mars’ 2013 Hot 100 charting song. It has the same verse sequence, melodic pitch design, bars of chorus, connecting baseline, lyric elements, some theatrical music elements, and certain chord progression.
